At last there is a way to tell whether complaints of pain in the upper limb represent primarily physical injury or psychosocial problem. Both are important, and often there is an overlap. This book tells how to differentiate one from the other.
It also provides clear guidance on how to tell if the injury is
work-related by:
1) History: did it start at work, become worse
with more work, and get better on week-ends?
2) More history: what is the
influence of non-work activity?
3) Job analysis: what tissues could be
damaged by the work activity?
4) Examination: are these the structures injured?
Experts in their own field discuss the metabollic and physiologcal changes in muscle with overuse, the ergonomic aspects of work injury, the structural central nervous system changes with chronic pain, and the sociological lessons learned in the Australian RSI epidemic. Diagnosis and treatment includes physical, psychological and sociological considerations. It starts on the shop floor and goes on to consider the influence of a global economy.
