Notes: The Melita, Jura and the Palistine were not built for the Allan Line. They were brought into service after the loss of several ships. These were dark days for the Allan Line as she lost the Canadian, June 1, 1857; the Indian, Nov 20, 1859, the Hungarian, Feb 2, 1860 and the second Canadian on June 4, 1861. (Appleton, Thomas E. Ravenscrag, The Allan Royal Mail Line. Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1974.). The following information on these two ships is supplied courtesy of Ted Finch.
The Jura was a 2,241 gross ton ship, built by J&G Thomson, Glasgow in 1854 for the Cunard Line. Her details were - length 314ft x beam 36ft, clipper stem, one funnel, three masts (rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a speed of 11 knots. Launched on June 27, 1854, she arrived at Liverpool from the Clyde on September 26, 1854 and became a Crimean War transport. On March 12, 1857 she sailed under charter to the European & Australian R.M.Line from Southampton to Alexandria and started her last voyage on this service on July 12, 1857. On September 16, 1857 she commenced Cunard sailings between Liverpool, Cork and New York and on February 6, 1861 started her last Liverpool - New York voyage. During this period she made two chartered voyages for the Allan Line between Liverpool, Quebec and Montreal, commencing September 6, 1860 and April 11, 1861. She was then purchased by the Allan Line and resumed Liverpool - Canada voyages on October 24, 1861. On November 3, 1864 she was wrecked in the River Mersey with no loss of life. The Melita was a 1,254 gross ton ship, built for Cunard in 1853 by Alexander Denny, Dumbarton (engines by Macnab & Clark, Greenock). Her details were - length 233ft x beam 29ft, clipper stem, one funnel, two masts(rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a speed of 9 knots. Launched on March 27, 1853, she was used on the Mediterranean service until June 13, 1860 when she sailed from Liverpool to Quebec and Montreal under charter to the Allan Line. After this single round voyage, she did a voyage for Cunard, leaving Liverpool on September 5, 1860 for Halifax and New York. In 1861 she was acquired by William Denny in part payment for the Sidon and in 1863 went to S & S. Isaac. On June 2, 1866 she commenced sailings between Liverpool - Queenstown - Boston - Philadelphia on charter to the Warren Line. She started her last voyage on this service on July 28, 1868 and on August 27, 1868 sailed from Boston for Liverpool, but was destroyed by fire at sea on 5th September. All the passengers and crew were rescued by the sailing ships, Jacob A.Stamler and Monequash [North Atlantic Seaway by N.R.P.Bonsor, vol.1,p.145-6]
The Palestine was built by R.Steele & Co, Greenock (engines by Robert Napier, Glasgow) in 1858 for the Cunard Line. She was a 1,800 gross ton ship, length 276ft x beam 36.1ft, clipper stem, one funnel, two masts (rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a speed of 10 knots. Launched in 1858 for the Mediterranean service, she commenced sailings between Liverpool, Quebec and Montreal under charter to the Allan Line on May 16, 1860. She started her fourth and last Allan voyage between Liverpool and Portland on November 8, 1860 and commenced Cunard voyages between Liverpool and New York on December 25, 1860. On April 4, 1865 she started her first Liverpool - Halifax - New York sailing and in January 1866 made her first Liverpool - Boston - New York voyage. Her last voyage on this route was made in November 1868 (4 round voyages on the Cunard N. Atlantic service). In 1872 she was sold to W.H. Jones, Liverpool, rebuilt to 352.1ft in length, 2,867 gross tons, three masts and fitted with compound engines by J & J. Thomson, Glasgow. Chartered to the Dominion Line, she started a single round voyage from Liverpool to Boston on March 27, 1873, and then started her first of three voyages between Liverpool, Quebec and Montreal on May 16, 1873, and her last on August 21, 1873. She was chartered to Warren Line and commenced Liverpool - Boston sailings on June 24, 1876. Her last voyage on this service started on November 23, 1892 and she was scrapped in 1896.
