From the Register Kept by Col. J. W. Laurie located in the Archives of Nova Scotia, RG 18, Series I, Vol. 1. I would like to thank S. Swiggum and A. Chappell for their assistance in obtaining this data and in helping to decipher it.
The data was entered into a ledger, which was intended for some type of military purpose. Column headings were crossed out and relabelled. In the remarks column below I have joined 3 columns from the original. Two of those columns seem to have been used for a single purpose. They are labelled No of Applic (Number of Applications I assume). Only one column is used and it occasionally contains a date/dates or sometimes a word or two. The Remarks column in the original rarely contained anything. When it did, it was usually "See Removals" or a number 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8. These appear below as 23.4.76 (6), i.e., the date it happened and the code for which I do not have a meaning. Sometimes a small letter "i" appears after a name and I do not know why.
In the address column you will often find the name of a place followed by the county name. For example, "River Inhabitants, Richmond, C.B." which I would translate as River Inhabitants, Richmond County, Cape Breton. However, sometimes they seem to be a little reversed, such as Digby Neck, Rossway. Please remember that you are looking at place names, and county names, from 1873-1876 and they may not be the same today. If anyone can help with names or places which have question marks after them it would be appreciated. Please send them to me.
This is the information for the children who came in the first group in August, 1873. Information for the other groups will follow.
