Charles E. Baring Young

Charles Young ran a small training farm for boys at Daylesford, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England. The lads were between 16 and 21 years of age.

In 1895 Young purchased a 200 acre farm near Woodstock, Ontario. The farm was called Havelock Farm and was managed by Mr. H.G. Benfield. Government records show that 10 lads arrived in 1909 but soon there were closer to 20 arriving each year.

Young died in 1932 at which time his brother took over operations of the farms. However, the brother died in 1933 and the work was passed to a Committee of Trustees. Young also endowed the Kingham Hill Trust where lads were trained in carpentry, masonry and other trades. Some of these lads were also sent to Canada.

In total, close to 200 lads came to Canada with Young's assistance.

The Library and Archives of Canada has files on this organization under C10648, Vol. 569, #813390 covering the period from 1909-1940. Kingham School still exists today.
